First, you have to sort everything. If you’re living on your own, this might not take long. If you have the belongings of the whole family to deal with, make sure you’re setting aside a sufficient amount of time. We could be here a while.
Make some easy to remember categories, like appliances, towels and linens, cosmetics, and cleaning supplies. Sort everything into one of these categories and keep things organized. Then it’s time for the next step.
Now look through each category of items and decide what you do and don’t need. Have multiple hair dryers or straighteners and really don’t need them? Get rid of the extra ones. Are there medications that are expired? Do you have towels and linens that are stained and old? What about cosmetics that are out of style or something you no longer wear? Get rid of all of it!
A mover may be charging you by weight, so carrying along extra things you may not even want or need to your new home is unwise. If you’re moving yourself, you’re just creating more to carry. Toss the stuff you don’t need now and you won’t have to worry about it later. Just make sure that you’re following local instructions for disposing of items like appliances and medicine.
Once you’ve gotten rid of everything you don’t need in your new home, keep everything else in their proper categories and pack them up for a move. Keep similar things together. If you have cleaning products or items like shampoo that are open, wrap them in plastic wrap or put them in plastic bags so they don’t leak and damage anything else. If you have fragile items, find the proper moving supplies at our storage center and keep them protected.
If you have any medication that you may need right away, separate it from everything else and make sure it doesn’t get buried in the move. This also applies to essentials that you may need even on the day that you move, like body wash, toothpaste, and a toothbrush. Finally, label those boxes and get started with your move! And remember to pack lighter boxes on top of heavier ones. You don’t want to crush anything fragile.
